Soundtrack Sunday – ASHFORD’S GHOST Edition

Ashford’s Ghost, Livi #2.5, is polished up and officially releases this Tuesday in the Hauntings duology with Dina James.  Patreon folks have been getting chapters monthly, and the final bundle posts on July 1st; eARCs also went out to people who donated to Dina’s fundraiser as well.

Here’s the soundtrack!

Lera Lynn – “Ring of Fire”
(There is a lot of fire in the book, so this is kind of literal, but fits the overall tone.)
I went down, down, down//and the flames went higher//and it burns

Mumford and Sons – “After the Storm“
A lot of this story is about lasting effects and fallout from the previous two books; this was the cemetery epilogue song from Odin’s Spear, and felt appropriate for this soundtrack as well.
And there will come a time, you’ll see, with no more tears.//And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.

Graeme Revell – “The Saint (Suite)“
Exploring the villa’s passages.

Unions – “Rescue Me”
Playing doctor (the non-sexy kind) in Ch. 5 Remnants
Sleepless nights I’m left believing//That you’ll come, that you’ll come and rescue me

Natalie Taylor – “In the Air Tonight”
“The words were startling, a bucket of ice tossed in my face. I felt my expression harden even as I tried to school it into something resembling indifference.”
Well, if you told me you were drowning//I would not lend a hand

Willie Nelson – “The Scientist“
Early Ch 8: Home Is Where the Ghosts Are
So tell me you love me//come back and haunt me

Poe – “If You Were Here“

Michael Giacchino – “Moving On“
During the back half of chapter eleven, Fear Itself

Ed Sheeran – “Wonderwall“
“You’re real.”
There are many things that I would//Like to say to you//But I don’t know how//Because maybe//You’re gonna be the one that saves me

Rihanna – “Stay“
During the epilogue.
Funny you’re the broken one but I’m the only one who needed saving//’Cause when you never see the light, it’s hard to know which one of us is caving

Also, ICYMI: there’s more West coming to Patreon in July.

Soundtrack Sunday – ODIN’S SPEAR Edition

A lot of Livi’s themes from Solomon’s Seal apply here too.

Ana Johnsson – “We Are“
Odin’s Spear book theme.

Jen Titus – “O’Death”
Opening funeral.

Odds – “I Would Be Your Man“
At the vet office: “On occasion.” “Watch it, Buttons.”
Is it gonna hurt if we try?//Is this the calm before the flood?//Well, we may skip like stones//Or you could pull me from the mud

Ed Sheeran – “Kiss Me”
“Periodically I forget you’re human. I’m sorry for that.” “I won’t let the apology go to my head, don’t worry.”
I was made to keep your body warm//But I’m cold as the wind blows so hold me in your arms

Bobby Tahouri – “The Deathless Prophet“
Exploring under the water.

Radiohead – “Creep (Acoustic)“
West.
Whatever makes you happy//Whatever you want   What the hell am I doing here//I don’t belong here//I don’t belong here

Jason Graves – “The Mask of Krati“

The Flamingos – “I Only Have Eyes For You”
“Mr. Dark Triad doesn’t bite?” “Not unless it benefits me, obviously.”

OneRepublic – “Something I Need“
“You fall, I fall.”
But you’re like the net under the ledge//when I go flying off the edge//you go flying off as well

Jason Graves – “Alone”
Chapter 35: Bigger Than a Breadbox

Madonna – “Die Another Day“
Chapter 37: War

Cranberries – “Zombie“
Also Ch 37.

Florence + The Machine – “Shake It Out”
This was my alternative for the epilogue theme.
Regrets collect like old friends//here to relive your darkest moments

Mumford & Sons – “After the Fall“
Epilogue theme.
Because death is just so full and man so small//Well I’m scared of what’s behind and what’s before//And there will come a time, you’ll see, with no more tears//And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears

The book is out on Tuesday! I hope you get it and enjoy it.

Soundtrack Sunday – SOLOMON’S SEAL Edition

1-Solomon'sSeal-KindleThis book has been in progress since 2012, so there’s a whole amalgamation of music…

Gabriella Cilmi – “On a Mission“
Livi’s theme (I wrote her opening scenes to it).  I wish I could link you guys to the old Buffy vid done to this song.
If you think I’m scared, you must be tripping//Foot on gas, key in ignition//Can’t stop now ’cause I’m on a mission//I am a woman on a mission//Nothing can stop me, I’m stronger than ever

Martina Topley-Bird – “I Only Have Eyes for You“
There’s a dance scene mentioning this song–this was the version I’d listened to.

U2 – “Elevation”
Of course I was going to have songs from my Tomb Raider soundtrack.

Radiohead – “Fake Plastic Trees“
It’s not actually on this book’s soundtrack, it’s in reference to something in Livi’s backstory (a joke that’s not entirely a joke).

Graeme Revell – “Stone Monkey Battle“
It was less stone monkeys and more the early serpent-dragon battles in the caves.

Immediate Music – “Prometheus Rising”
Livi drops down the pitch to save Laurel.

Two Steps from Hell – “Mercy in Darkness“
Livi locks eyes with the tiger.

Immediate Music – “Serenata Immortale”
A Livi theme.

Peter Connelly & Martin Iveson – “Angel of Darkness (Main Theme)“

Troel Brun Folmann – “Tomb Raider: Underworld (Main Theme)“
Yes, I went through all the Tomb Raider themes I had, shut up.

Troel Brun Folmann – “Tomb Raider: Legend (Main Theme)”
ALL the Tomb Raider themes. This was actually in a lot of the Ethiopia scenes.

Troel Brun Folmann – “Tomb Raider: Anniversary (Main Theme)”
As was this.

Immediate Music – “An Epic Age“
Wrote the Livi-fights-a-dragon to this one, the chapter Drakon Rising. You can hear the moment at 1:01 where Momma Drakon opens her eye, and 2:19 when Livi…yeah, you’ll see. 😉

UnKle – “Burn My Shadow“
One of West’s themes.

Jason Graves – “Calling for Help“
In the caves.

Destiny’s Child – “Survivor“
Look, Livi basically has my running playlist.
I’m a survivor//I’m not gon’ give up//I’m not gon’ stop//I’m gon’ work harder

E.S. Posthumus – “Elba“
When Livi arrives in the villa at the end.

E.S. Posthumus – “Menouthis“
More villa battle.

Sara Barielles – “Breathe Again“
The epilogue theme.
All those words came undone and now I’m not the only one//Facing the ghosts that decide if the fire inside still burns

And, finally, the series’ theme for my two favourites:

OneRepublic – “Something I Need“

I hope you’re ready for Solomon’s Seal on Tuesday! You can pre-order everywhere books are sold.

Soundtrack Sunday – OBLIVION Edition

Oblivion-kindleThis is a trickier one as the book has two different narrating protagonists, each with their own soundtrack, and both settings (our world and that of Oblivion) have their own as well.

For Peri’s parts of the books, there’s a fair amount of crossover with her Lineage soundtrack, obviously. Here’s a sampling of what I listened to with this book.

Mourning Ritual – “Bad Moon Rising“
Heard this cover, instantly found it fit perfectly with the dark apocalyptic tone of this book; I wish I could transfer the images in my head so you could see the Oblivion music video I see to it.

Amy Lee – “With or Without You“
The Utada Hikaru cover of this was on the Lineage soundtrack, as it was one of my Peri/Nic themes. Given the dark tone of this book, I like this darker version of it.

Disturbed – “The Sound of Silence“
There’s an important chapter later in the book with this same title.

Thirty Seconds to Mars – “This Is War“
Although this is the last book, I’ve said repeatedly there are more carrying on another arc (of about five books), and it’s more during those final books, in addition to Oblivion, that This Is War becomes the theme song. If you want to leave guesses in the comments to where the characters fit (the soldier, the civilian, the martyr, the victim, the prophet, the liar, the honest, the leader, the pariah, the victor, the messiah), have at it.

Smashing Pumpkins – “The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning“
This is very much my theme for the Oblivion dimension scenes, as well as Mishka’s POV.

Lana Del Rey – “Once Upon a Dream“
Another Oblivion dimension song, given the creepy etherealness to it.

Janel Drewis – “In the Pines”
I had to write some really difficult Peri scenes during the the beginning of her last section, and I had this on repeat. (h/t to Amanda for the suggestion!)

Gemma Hayes – “Wicked Game“
“The world is on fire and no one can save me but you”

Sanders Bohike – “The Weight of Us“
“there’s a cold heart buried beneath//and warm blood running deep//and secrets are mine to keep//protected by silent sleep//I’m not ready//for the weight of us”

Alex and Sierra – “Little Do You Know“
Mel suggested this as a Zara/Nate song, and of course it ended up on my playlist. It fits them really well, particularly the alternating voices with Zara echoing Sierra and Nate echoing Alex.
“Little do you know//I’m still haunted by the memory//Little do you know//I’m trying to pick myself up piece by piece//Little do you know//I need a little more time”
“I’ll wait, I’ll wait//I love you like you’ve never felt the pain” and “Little do you know//I love you ’til the sun dies”

John Murphy – “In the House, in a Heartbeat”
A bunch of action scenes were written to this one.

Matthew Perryman Jones – “Canción de la noche“
“Is it your ghost//Keeps hiding under the smoke//It’s getting louder”

Electric President – “Safe and Sound”
“When there’s no way out//I’ll let you build your home with me till the clocks run down//When your looks run out//Call me and I will come and fix you get your feet on the ground//When there’s no way out//Call me and I will come and bury you all safe and sound”

Clarity – “Don’t Panic“
A lot of the more emotional stuff toward the end of the book and apocalyptic stuff was written to this.
“Bones sinking like stones//All that we’ve fought for//Homes, places we’ve grown//All of us are done for”

Peter Gabriel – “Heroes“
The final, pre-epilogue chapter was written to this. (I apologize in advance for that.)
“We can be heroes, if just for one day”

Peter Gabriel – “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today“
This is the epilogue theme, which I knew for years before I wrote the book.
“Broken windows and empty hallways//a pale lit moon in a sky streaked with grey//Human kindness is overflowing//and I think it’s gonna rain today.”

Soundtrack Sunday – SOULLESS Edition

SoullessRedux-smIt’s time for the Soulless soundtrack!

I really had to dig back for this, I wrote it in 2009 or so, one computer ago. I do recall I wrote huge chunks of it over a couple of days listening to a lot of Leonard Cohen but I don’t remember which songs in particular.

Bill Withers – “Ain’t No Sunshine“
Referenced in the book and what Rafe was humming in the epilogue (as Ani was “gone”).
Wonder this time where she’s gone//Wonder if she’s gone to stay//Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone

Eva Cassidy – “Ain’t No Sunshine“
I can’t NOT have an Eva Cassidy version of a song if I have the original.

Sarah McLachlan – “Fallen“
Heaven bend to take my hand And lead me through the fire

Evanescence – “Hello“
Don’t try to fix me, I’m not broken

Earlimart – “The World“
Oh, the world is all around us But have you noticed me?

Adele – “Make You Feel My Love“
I could hold you for a million years//To make you feel my love

Dr. John – “I Don’t Wanna Know“
And all around the cold is glistening//Making sure it keeps me down to size.

Willie Nelson – “Bird On The Wire“
Like a baby, stillborn//like a beast with his horn//I have torn everyone who reached out for me.

Eva Cassidy – “Time After Time“
If you fall I will catch you – I’ll be waiting

Ivan Neville – “Why Can’t I Fall In Love?“
This was the love theme for the book, what Rafe and Ani dance to.
I know she’s out there waiting//It’s time to fall in love//And let her know//Just how I feel//Give it up//Or give it all
