“When’s That Book Coming?” Summer 2022 Edition

As I said last week, Summer Revision Madness is underway here at Chez Skyla. Charon’s Gold is off for copyedits, and I finished a round on Witch Hunt last night, so that’ll be off when she’s ready for it. I’m diving into Soul Spell next, to get it cleaned up a bit and the last bundles of chapters scheduled for patrons.

What’s New

All new at Patreon.

Soul Spell started at Patreon in June. There have also been two new vignettes/shorts at Patreon: one was Future Days from Zara’s POV (set during a Witch Hunt flashback) and the most recent Livi’s Choice about the abortion she had a few years prior to Solomon’s Seal.

I finally made up a Demons of Oblivion/Elis O’Connor series reading order in PDF, current as of July 2022, so if that’s your thing, download here.

Oblivion-Elis-Reading-OrderDownload

What’s Upcoming

Unless the copyeditor thinks it’s going to need a huge amount of work (which is possible!), Charon’s Gold should still be coming out October 25.

Preorder links: Kindle | Kobo | iBooks | Nook (paperback coming in October)

Witch Hunt will come out in paperback as well in the coming months. Scheduling is a little messed up due to factors outside my control and I don’t want to toss a bunch of things at the copyeditor at once, so that’ll wait to go out until sometime next month.

Watcher of the Woods is still on track for February 14 2023–it’s on my revision schedule for August.

Preorder links: Kindle – Kobo – iBooks – Nook (there’ll also be hardcover and paperback upon release)

Remember, there’s some crossover with Dweller on the Threshold as they exist in the same world, but you should be fine to jump in without it (though seriously, Dweller is super fun, please go buy it!).

Also in 2023…

The first two Waverly Jones Mysteries have their release dates set for next year, late spring and late fall.

The Killing Beach is up first on May 30 2023.

Preorder links: Kindle – Kobo – iBooks – Nook (there’ll also be hardcover and paperback upon release)

A Wild Kind of Darkness is out after that on November 7, 2023. Currently the only place you’ll find the preorder is at Kobo but the rest will be up in November.

Alone at Night will be a 2024 release, though I’m not sure where to slot it yet.

Summer 2023 will involve serializing Hell Fire (Elis #4), which I haven’t started yet.

Considering I try to space releases out, yes, this means the final Livi book will not be a 2023 release–I could miraculously finish the mostly un-started zero draft by the end of fall, but it seems unlikely, and even if it happened, I always need a lot of time for revisions and edits (and probably extra time with this one). So the very earliest will be spring 2024, probably.

If Elis is the six books I’m expecting it to be, the sixth and final will serialize at Patreon in 2025, so Livi 8 will start there probably 2026 if I’ve got my math right.

What I’m Working On

Thus far this year, I’ve written Alone at Night (Waverly 3) and Soul Spell (Elis 3). I’ve been in revision mode, but I really want to finish the next Waverly book I’ve already started (which…okay so I realized I’m writing them out of order, so it’ll later be book six rather than four). I miss writing new things regularly, working on vignettes for Patreon notwithstanding, and I’m hoping to clear all these revisions off my plate by fall so I can write Waverly 4 (the new one) and 5 by the end of the year.

“When’s That Book Coming?” Fall 2019 Edition

It’s Thanksgiving in Canada, and I did manage a family dinner yesterday, which is no small feat given that I’ve been getting over food poisoning.

Long-time followers will remember when I was sick five years ago (this month is the anniversary of my diagnosis and finally getting treatment, actually) and how difficult that was. What triggered the disease back then was (likely; nothing is every understood 100% but science is pointing this way) a bout of food poisoning that lead to my immune system becoming overactive and attacking my body. Five years is a long time for remission and to feel well-ish again, but this has thrown me back into the terror of a relapse. (Terror is really the only word for it, and I think only if you’ve ever been in remission after being seriously sick will you understand how scary it is to feel like you’re going to be ill again.) So I’m trying to chill for a few weeks and hoping I’m not about to get worse.

You don’t come here for my health updates, I realize, but that’s what’s going on here and why I’m not around much. I’ve been super stressed for a few months with work and volunteer stuff, and I’ve been fighting a depressive episode, so this is the trifecta of fucked-up health stuff. I’ve always seen physical illnesses as a sign to slow down, so I’ve been trying to take some quiet time while balancing it with the fact that if I get too quiet and keep too much to myself, it’s easier for my brain to try to murder me. Fun times!

With that out of the way…

What’s New

Shiva’s Bow released!

No one’s yelled at me yet for it, so I’ve got that going for me. Several new peeps joined Patreon–yay! (Except for the pledge-dodger who joined to steal stuff and delete before she was charged–boo!)

And also…

Bloodlines was officially moved in audiobook to my ACX account as well, which means when you buy a copy now, I will actually get paid for it.

What’s Upcoming

Stuff! One more project, hopefully before the year is out, and then stuff is coming next year.

The rough draft was completed and posted at Patreon, and will be coming your way either late next month or sometime in December (or January–I dunno)… A new Zara story.

As mentioned when I released King’s Bounty, I’ve a few First Dates stories I plan to write and release, and this is the next one.

Snarky vampire Zara Lain decides to end a dry spell by doing something new: she asks out the veterinarian for her saber-tooth cat for drinks.

The guy is nice. The date goes well.

And then all hell breaks loose.

An old enemy is back and willing to do anything to make her save him from an assassination attempt–bribes, threats, and even making her the new target.

Release date: TBD
Preoder: TBD

*Subtitle might change to “novella” since it’s 15K words and might expand a little bit in revision.

It’s set post-Oblivion and will dovetail into a new series coming next year…which I will now officially tell you about publicly as I’ve finished the (very, very rough) zero draft.

Introducing…Demons of Oblivion: The Next Generation

Elis O’Connor kills people.

“Garbage men”, to be exact—the predators, the abusers…and the occasional mansplainer. It scratches an itch and, since the death of her mother sent her spiraling, it hardly seems like the worst way to pass her time in a post-apocalyptic city crawling with demons and dimensional tears.

One thing she doesn’t do is save men.

But that’s about to change when a woman comes to her door for help finding her missing cousin. While Elis would love to send her packing, this cousin isn’t just anyone: he’s Elis’s estranged older half-brother Dev, and he’s gotten himself into trouble even the considerable magic ability they both share can’t get him out of.

Release date: TBD (2020)
Preorder: TBD

Series followers will recognize her surname and probably surmise who Dev is. While I think it is enhanced by knowing the previous series, it’s written as its own entity that newcomers should be able to follow along with. I will remind series fans that there was a whole other five-book arc due that I am likely not going back to–or if I do, they won’t be published–so a lot has changed in the world. That backstory is not the focus of the new series, though hints are given.

All I will confirm at this time is that yes, Nate has a daughter who is a pansexual witch serial killer of bad men. You’re welcome.

Blood Ties will have a wider release maybe by the spring, but the intent is to serialize it at Patreon and Gumroad with two chapters a week for a couple of months first, likely starting in January. I’ll set the dates once I have the zero draft worked into a respectable first draft–right now I’ve left out a couple of scenes and it’s more of a sketch than anything else. It’s also my plan to make it into a series because I love writing Elis.

So those are the projects I’ve finished.

Still in progress but set for sometime next year:

Betrayal and sacrifice follow Livi Talbot on her darkest adventure yet.

Still reeling from the ultimate betrayal that has set her entire world off-kilter, the hits keep coming when Livi’s estranged mother—who abandoned the Talbot family twenty years ago—shows up without warning. She’s looking for a pre-Incan stone idol in the ruins of an abandoned Spanish mission that has escaped looters for centuries, and she asks Livi to find it.

Livi wants to be anywhere but home, and a trip with her family to Peru is just what she needs to clear her head—even if it involves reconnecting with her mom. But a heartbroken adventurer is a distracted one, making Livi the perfect target for supernatural guardians in the jungle…and more danger from those closest to her that she might not see until it’s too late.

Release date: TBD 2020
Preorder: TBD

I literally have the rest all mapped out and ready, I’m just…so, so tired. But I’ll get there. It’s only 60K or so to go.

Also next year will be Waverly Jones, which is also mapped out and eager to be written.

Stay tuned for preorder links to various things soon!

“When’s That Book Coming?” Summer 2018 Edition

It’s very hard to write books when everything you love is dead. Also hard to do: get up, work, clean, bathe, breathe, not cry, have patience with people who discard their cats like trash. But alas I manage to do most of those things, even if it takes longer and is quite taxing, and last night I finished the fourth draft of the third Livi novel.

There’s still a fifth draft to go. And copyediting. And proofreading. But it’s a big chunk of work done at last, and the book is now up for preorder.

But first…

What’s New

The West prequel novel, Tiger’s Memory, is complete, polished, and available at Patreon for folks $10+.

The prequel novel about West’s first major assignment, his first girlfriend, and how it goes terribly wrong for him on both counts.

Before he was known as brutal operative Dale West, he was Suh Dae-il, a twenty-year-old rising star in the agency who escaped a North Korean prison camp five years earlier.  Charismatic, brilliant, and manipulative, he’s the perfect spy—right up until he’s assigned his first target.

Becoming the person who could convince a girl to flip on her family means submerging himself in another world entirely. If he disappears in this other persona completely, he risks losing his job, his purpose, and the people who gave him a new life after he fled hell; if he remains the operative beneath the surface, he could lose the girl he’s fallen in love with when she learns the truth about his subterfuge.

Either way it may not matter when agency operatives and their targets in the area are killed. Dae-il is in someone’s crosshairs—someone who shares his unique abilities and has no qualms about his girlfriend becoming collateral damage in a mission that will change the magical landscape of the entire world.

That’s about all I finished. The Livi Postcard Story is in progress at Patreon, and I’ve just started Solomon’s Seal from West’s POV.

What’s Upcoming

Mark your calendars…

October 16, 2018

Yes, the title changed, but the cover hasn’t.

Preorder: Kindle US | Kindle UK | Kindle CA | Kobo | iBookstore (more coming soon)

This is a big book. Current draft is at 121 525 words (Livi books are normally 106K). That might bump up a bit as the book needs some prettying up–I try (and hopefully succeed) to make Livi’s books very visual and cinematic, but this one was difficult to just get all the pieces in place. Next draft will smooth it out. I’m frightfully insecure about it because it was so difficult, and I know it’s a year behind schedule, but I sincerely hope it’s worth the wait for readers and y’all enjoy it.

This book has…

  • Livi vs a terracotta army!
  • The elixir of immortality!
  • A hot Australian treasure hunter!
  • SEA MONSTERS!
  • A sort-of apology for Certain Things in Oblivion!

I think when I’m done hating it, I will ultimately be very proud of it. It caps off Livi’s character arc nicely–if I ended it here, it would make a solid trilogy of books, I think. There are of course more–I’m writing the fifth right now–but Livi is on life support and can use all the help she can get. Please, during the blood moon/eclipse, sacrifice a virgin or two (I mean, whatever you can find) and at least half a dozen unicorns to whatever deity of your choice and maybe sales will increase.

The countdown is on to be thanked in the acknowledgements of Emperor’s Tomb! Like the producer credits on the movie, Patrons of Snark get thanked for their monthly support in all my books. Join for as little as a buck a month and get added to the acknowledgements.

Then, coming either next month or in September,

The Oblivion bundle will be on Kindle Unlimited for three months before distribution is expanded elsewhere. Here’s the table of contents:

Bloodlines
“Thrall”
Hunter
“Malice”
Lineage
“Sunrise”
“Whiskey Sour”
Exhumed
“Fated”
“Prey”
Oblivion

It does not include 9 Crimes (or “Aftermath”), Damaged, “A Vampire Walked Into a Bar”/”Zombie Faeries”, “Resist“, or Dial V for Vampire.

I wanted to give the series a quick proofread (again) but I haven’t the mental capacity for it, so that’s why I’m being vague on the release right now. So…”soon”.

What I’m Working On

Besides more revisions on Livi 3, I have other stuff in progress I’m not ready to talk about yet. When I have details, I’ll share them, I just don’t like to jinx projects in early development.

At Last We Visit OBLIVION

Oblivion-kindleSome of you have been waiting since Exhumed first released in 2012, and I know it was originally scheduled for 2013…but here is the final book in the series at last. I just hope everyone remembers everything that came before it, because I wrote it with the assumption you do.

Oblivion is now available wherever ebooks are sold, including Kindle US, Kindle UK, Kindle Canada, Kindle Australia, Kobo, Nook, iBookstore, OmniLit, GooglePlay, Smashwords, Direct, Payhip… See, everywhere. It’s even out in print now too.

The ebook also contains a five chapter preview of Solomon’s Seal, due out September 20 (the ARC, uncorrected galley proof version).

One quick request–I greatly appreciate reviews, I really do. You have no idea how much they help–the more reviews a book has somewhere like Amazon, the higher it pops up in search results, and the more copies sell. I think it’s something like only 2% of readers leave a review, so it’s tremendously helpful.

Just please, please…please try not to spoil the end of the book for others. It was really upsetting when Exhumed came out and the big plot twists I’d kept a wrap on for several years were revealed the week of release. I’m always careful to not reveal much ahead of time and ask others consider doing so as well–one-star it, send me hate mail, but please try to let others discover what’s coming just as you did.

If you want to discuss the book with other readers when you’ve read it, you can join in at Alchemy Red on Facebook.

ICYMI, the Oblivion soundtrack is here.

I’m also at Mel’s today, talking about the end of a series (she has a review up too!).

The series sale is on for a couple more days.

Oblivion-sale

Now I’ve had a really rough couple of days and I’m going to stay offline and try to get some work done. Happy reading.

Soundtrack Sunday – OBLIVION Edition

Oblivion-kindleThis is a trickier one as the book has two different narrating protagonists, each with their own soundtrack, and both settings (our world and that of Oblivion) have their own as well.

For Peri’s parts of the books, there’s a fair amount of crossover with her Lineage soundtrack, obviously. Here’s a sampling of what I listened to with this book.

Mourning Ritual – “Bad Moon Rising“
Heard this cover, instantly found it fit perfectly with the dark apocalyptic tone of this book; I wish I could transfer the images in my head so you could see the Oblivion music video I see to it.

Amy Lee – “With or Without You“
The Utada Hikaru cover of this was on the Lineage soundtrack, as it was one of my Peri/Nic themes. Given the dark tone of this book, I like this darker version of it.

Disturbed – “The Sound of Silence“
There’s an important chapter later in the book with this same title.

Thirty Seconds to Mars – “This Is War“
Although this is the last book, I’ve said repeatedly there are more carrying on another arc (of about five books), and it’s more during those final books, in addition to Oblivion, that This Is War becomes the theme song. If you want to leave guesses in the comments to where the characters fit (the soldier, the civilian, the martyr, the victim, the prophet, the liar, the honest, the leader, the pariah, the victor, the messiah), have at it.

Smashing Pumpkins – “The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning“
This is very much my theme for the Oblivion dimension scenes, as well as Mishka’s POV.

Lana Del Rey – “Once Upon a Dream“
Another Oblivion dimension song, given the creepy etherealness to it.

Janel Drewis – “In the Pines”
I had to write some really difficult Peri scenes during the the beginning of her last section, and I had this on repeat. (h/t to Amanda for the suggestion!)

Gemma Hayes – “Wicked Game“
“The world is on fire and no one can save me but you”

Sanders Bohike – “The Weight of Us“
“there’s a cold heart buried beneath//and warm blood running deep//and secrets are mine to keep//protected by silent sleep//I’m not ready//for the weight of us”

Alex and Sierra – “Little Do You Know“
Mel suggested this as a Zara/Nate song, and of course it ended up on my playlist. It fits them really well, particularly the alternating voices with Zara echoing Sierra and Nate echoing Alex.
“Little do you know//I’m still haunted by the memory//Little do you know//I’m trying to pick myself up piece by piece//Little do you know//I need a little more time”
“I’ll wait, I’ll wait//I love you like you’ve never felt the pain” and “Little do you know//I love you ’til the sun dies”

John Murphy – “In the House, in a Heartbeat”
A bunch of action scenes were written to this one.

Matthew Perryman Jones – “Canción de la noche“
“Is it your ghost//Keeps hiding under the smoke//It’s getting louder”

Electric President – “Safe and Sound”
“When there’s no way out//I’ll let you build your home with me till the clocks run down//When your looks run out//Call me and I will come and fix you get your feet on the ground//When there’s no way out//Call me and I will come and bury you all safe and sound”

Clarity – “Don’t Panic“
A lot of the more emotional stuff toward the end of the book and apocalyptic stuff was written to this.
“Bones sinking like stones//All that we’ve fought for//Homes, places we’ve grown//All of us are done for”

Peter Gabriel – “Heroes“
The final, pre-epilogue chapter was written to this. (I apologize in advance for that.)
“We can be heroes, if just for one day”

Peter Gabriel – “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today“
This is the epilogue theme, which I knew for years before I wrote the book.
“Broken windows and empty hallways//a pale lit moon in a sky streaked with grey//Human kindness is overflowing//and I think it’s gonna rain today.”

Oblivion is out on Tuesday!
