Guest Post: Writing Trapped in Your Storm

I’m very pleased to have my friend Darien Cox back for a visit to talk about his new release, Trapped in Your Storm.

Writing Trapped in Your Storm – The Big Compromise

trappedinyourstorm-kindle2016 has been one of the most satisfying years for me as a writer, something I’d never have anticipated if you spoke to me on New Year’s Day. Like many people, I sat there in a post-holiday haze, rubbing the hangover out of my temples and muttering, “I have GOT to get my shit together.”

But I wasn’t just thinking of over-eating and too many cocktails. I hadn’t put out a book since the previous July, with Victim of Love. I’d started many, mind you, but nothing clicked. None of those false starts felt like ‘the one’. Like starting a new romantic relationship, there’s a Catch22 involved. Gotta feel it out and take the time to get to know it before you decide if it’s for you or not. But if you don’t at least try it on, you’ll never know.

It can sound a little pretentious when writers say ‘My characters tell me what to do’. But it happens. The thing is, that magic experience of channeling only kicks in once you’ve actually committed. The characters ‘telling you what to do’ means a story is really flowing, and that’s a good thing. But as I was about to start Book Three in The Village Series, suddenly I was in conflict with my characters. Because they were telling me what to do before I even wrote the first word. The problem was—I disagreed with them.

I’d put the first book in the series, Safe in Your Fire, out in March. The second, Deep in Your Shadows, came out in June. Now here I was, late summer, getting ready to write the third installment. When I first crafted the idea for this series, about four best friends who’d been brought together for a secret agenda in a quirky mountain village, I knew they’d all ultimately get their own books. That was the plan—four guys—four books.

safeinyourfire-lgIt had worked out great for the first two. JT’s love interest is an invasive journalist who comes in from out of town. Then Christian’s love interest is the local sheriff, who has no idea what’s really going on in the village.  But when I started outlining Book Three, pondering who Elliot’s love interest should be, suddenly I was plagued with dreams, images flashing in my mind even as I tried to push them out, this nagging thing going against my efforts to give Elliot a fresh love interest from outside the established village community.

The problem was Nolan. Nolan, the fourth team member. Elliot’s best friend. The guy who was supposed to feature in his own book next. I had it all worked out. Elliot would be Book Three. Nolan would be Book Four. But now suddenly, they’re telling me they want to be together. That they want it to be their story, not separate, but combined. These two friends wanted a story about them becoming lovers.

What a freaking mess I was in.

As the scenes and dialog and images of Nolan and Elliot together continued forcing their way into my thoughts, I struggled to push them out. I can’t give you guys this! You can’t be romantically linked! I need to separate you so you’ll each have your own book! I had plans, dammit. This is not what’s supposed to happen, you jerks!

I voiced my complaints to writer friends I trust, to my editor, to my significant other. They all told me what I already knew. You have to write what you’re feeling. You can’t force it another way for the sole purpose of dragging the series out for a fourth book. It’s hard enough to achieve that feeling to begin with. Now you’re gonna fight it? Fight something that’s already happening?

deepinyourshadows-lgWe’ve all heard the phrase ‘kill your darlings’, but it usually refers to a plot point the author finds clever but adds nothing to the story. But this time, I had to kill an entire book—this fourth book I’d planned to be solely about Nolan. I agonized over it, got annoyed at the characters, and worried it was the wrong choice. How would this work? Nolan and Elliot’s friendship is so deep, they work together on top secret projects, and the stability of their relationship is crucial to the entire team in Singing Bear Village. What if it doesn’t work? Will readers of The Village Series freak out and say what the hell are you doing? Because that’s what I was asking myself. What the hell am I doing?

Ultimately I had to make a choice. To do exactly what Elliot and Nolan wanted to do—take a risk. I’m pleased to say, I’m glad I took that risk. Still unsure if this would work, I started the story, and said okay boys, have at it. Show me what you got.

They showed me all right. Once those floodgates opened, Elliot and Nolan’s story spilled out so fast my wrists were aching trying to keep up with it. It felt natural, right, the perfect mix of awkwardness and excitement, and ultimately for me, one of the most enjoyable love stories I’ve ever written.

And so Book Three, Trapped in Your Storm, came out this week. It is Elliot and Nolan’s story, and concludes The Village Series with a bang—both in and out of the bedroom. So I invite readers of the series to follow along that risky path with Nolan and Elliot, and see how it turns out. With luck, you’ll have as much fun with it as I did. Thanks for reading!

Darien

Note from Skyla: I STILL HOPE THERE IS MORE SINGING BEAR VILLAGE BECAUSE BAZ.

Safe in Your Fire, the first in The Village series, is currently 99c–pick it up and then keep reading! Deep in Your Shadows is next, followed by the new release Trapped in Your Storm.

Guest Post: Vampires Make the Best Rock Stars by Seleste deLaney

I am so excited to have author Seleste deLaney at my blog today. I’ve known Seleste online for many years now, as a friend, an editor at my ex-employer, and as partners in eviltry at the Evil League of Evil Writers. Today she’s sharing a guest post for her blog tour to promote her newest release Kiss of Life (which I helped work on!) and talking about one of my favourite characters in the book, Remy.

Please join me in welcome Seleste, and if you dig well-written, super sexy urban fantasy, check out her Blood Kissed series.

—-

Have you ever noticed how many vampires are musicians? And why not? They have all that time on their hands to learn new things, why not instruments, right? Honestly, vampires are in kind of ideal situations to position themselves as rock stars for several reasons:

  • Sure a mere mortal can learn to play an instrument or twelve, but how many of them have the time to become great at all of them? Not many. Vampires have centuries to learn and practice.
  • Another thing they have time for? Linguistics. Not only can they build a huge vocabulary in their native tongue, they have time to learn multiple languages. Bilingual artists, eat your hearts out, our vampire rockstars can sing in a dozen languages without missing a beat.
  • I’m talking musical influence here. Sure, anyone can sample from Motown, but when you’re talking vampires, they’ll be taking their influence from generations of music. Mozart-inspired rock music? I could totally get behind that.
  • Vampires spend their lives learning to blend in and hide. They are consummate actors.
  • Eternal (or at least lengthy) youth. Have you looked at Jon Bon Jovi lately? Other than the hair, he looks almost the same as he did in the early 90s. Yes, I think he’s a vampire. Yes, it makes me like him even more.
  • Sleep all day, party all night, it’s fun being a rock star…er, I mean vampire. Let’s face it, there’s not really another career path as well suited to a creature of the night as being a rock star.
  • Another win for the undead is the clothes. Rock stars are allowed—and often encouraged—to dress outlandishly. So a guy showing up in a peacock feathered jacket one day and a top hat and studded tailcoat the next isn’t really that crazy…if he’s a rock god.
  • No one cares if a rock star keeps odd hours or behaves weirdly. We expect it. What better hiding place than out in the open but draping oneself in layers and sunglasses?
  • Okay, not all vampires have magic, but think about one who does and if they can imbue their voice with it. A vampire could have half the modern world under their spell before the first chorus. Now that’s power.

I get asked sometimes why I made Remy a rock star. After all, he doesn’t perform that often in the Blood Kissed books. The easy answer is that I modeled him after a musician, but that’s not the whole truth. You see, that list of things up there? That’s Remy in spades. He’s the character who likes to keep everyone around him guessing, so he embraces “rock god” like it’s the title he was born for.

Or would that be died for?

KissofLife-AREAbout Kiss of Life:

The vampire’s curse has been awakened, and Jocelyn has no choice but to accept her destiny as the Blood Kissed—the one destined to destroy the vampires…or rule them. While Max and Chad want to help her reach her full potential, not all of the supernaturals share their plan.

The Council of Elders, a crazed sorcerer assassin, and a vampire hunter out for revenge have driven Jocelyn into hiding. She and her ragtag army have holed up in the forests of Michigan’s upper peninsula to get ready for the fight. If training is any indication, they should be ready for war by the time she turns fifty.

But no one is going to let her wait that long. War is nigh, the death toll is rising, and when Michigan’s most famous harbinger of doom shows up on the scene, the army of the Blood Kissed is hoping for a miracle, praying to be graced with a little kiss of life…

About Seleste:

At a young age, Seleste deLaney discovered the trick to not being afraid of the monsters under the bed was to turn them into heroes. Since that time, she’s seen enough of human monsters that she prefers to escape to fictional worlds where even the worst demons have to play by the rules and the good guys might end up battered and bruised (or dead), but they always win. And really, isn’t that the way it should be?

She resides in the Detroit area with all her favorite monsters (nice ones—some are furry and the others call her Mom) and is hard at work on her next book. In those rare moments when she isn’t battling terrorists, vampires, or rogue clockworks, she can be found all over the Internet, where she loves to interact with readers.

Getting to the Bottom of Guys on Top with Darien Cox

CriminalPleasures_ARESeducingProfessorCoyle-lgDarien Cox popped my cherry.

My m/m cherry, that is. Yes, prior to his work, I’d never m/m romance, but having worked with Cox his wonderful SF hetero erom debut, Fluid Motion (for reals, go read, because it’s delicious and fun with characters I adored), I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work on future books that were all m/m. And since then I’ve worked with Darien as an artist and an editor for nearly two years, and it was a thrill to see his work pay off when Seducing Professor Coyle took off last September. The streak continued when his sixth book, Criminal Pleasures, exploded on the m/m scene in November, and now we have Guys on Top.

It’s a non-traditional romance, a character-driven piece that defies reader expectations, and a must read for anyone looking for a well-written m/m that’s definitely out of the box. Below the blurb you’ll find a Q&A with Darien about his new release as well as a chance to win an eBook from his backlist.

GuysOnTop-KindleDoug Crandall’s perfect suburban life imploded after his boyfriend’s betrayal and a subsequent lawsuit left him personally and financially devastated. A year later, with a new place in the city and a fresh outlook, he’s back on his feet and ready to start over. Eager to lose his cynicism and heal his battered heart, he immerses himself in the local social scene, which includes a pair of charismatic men engaged in an open relationship. As Doug finds himself becoming emotionally and sexually entangled in their lives, he’s forced to reevaluate his views on fidelity, betrayal, love, and the often calamitous price of happiness.

Guys On Top is very different from your previous novels. What inspired you to write about the somewhat risky topic of open relationships?

I knew I was taking a chance covering this topic because of the subject matter. But I’ve known many people who’ve been in similar situations, and decided it was something worth exploring. I have a very close friend whose been in a committed relationship with his boyfriend for years, but when they first met, his boyfriend was in an open relationship with two other men. I found this fascinating, and one nosy afternoon I asked if he’d share his feelings on those early days when they met, how it went down, how he felt about it at the time. He was kind enough to share details regarding his insecurities initially – the jealousy that lingered for a while after they got together, wondering if his new love would eventually decide one man wasn’t enough, since he’d come from such a completely different, non-monogamous situation. That conversation and others I had with friends gave me the fodder I needed to start the story. I wanted to make it a fun experience, but I also wanted to treat the subject matter with respect. I tried very hard to keep an unbiased balance and show both sides of the coin. I didn’t want to present either monogamy or open relationships as ‘the right’ choice. Because in the end the only right choice is what’s right for the individuals involved.

Doug is very conflicted internally as a character, going back and forth regarding his decision to accept Stewart’s attentions and his feeling that it’s wrong somehow. How did you determine his motivation for the decisions he makes?

Edges-lgDoug’s at a place in his life where he’s learning to accept change, and that the life we have in mind for ourselves isn’t always what we get. After his ideas of what his life is ‘supposed’ to be like are shattered, he’s forced to open his mind to new things, and that’s one of the reason he tries to accept Stewart and Corey’s situation, though part of him rejects it completely. But he’s ultimately motivated by his feelings for Stewart. Falling in love is one of the most out of control experiences we can have as human beings. We’re wired for it, all those lusty chemicals clouding our brains, often a battle between what the body wants, what the heart wants, and what the logical mind tells you is the right thing to do. It’s easy to stand on the outside of that and decide ‘Dude, you’re playing with fire, stop now.’ But when you’re in it, being carried away by that hurricane of feelings, it’s a gamble which side is gonna win out, and sometimes the call of the heart is too strong to fight.

Corey’s character is described as ‘larger than life’. He provides a lot of comic relief. How did you come up with Corey’s character and what purpose do you think he serves in the story?

Corey is actually based on someone I know – and that someone knows I exploited his personality in this book- but I won’t out him! I think we’ve all had that friend who possesses that certain glow, a magnetic power that makes them stand out in a crowd, and makes people want to be near them, to have a little piece of it for themselves. Of course with Corey I took it to the next level, making him a self-proclaimed healer, accentuating his ‘magical’ qualities. But when someone has that otherworldly vibe, it’s easy to forget that they’re real, and have their own emotions and personal pain. With Corey, Doug is forced to look beyond his prejudices and learn there’s often more to what we see on the surface. Corey is also the obstacle wedged between Doug and his desire for Stewart. Not only because Corey is Stewart’s boyfriend, but because he’s everything Doug is not, and therefore makes him question himself, and if he alone will ever be enough.

Without giving away spoilers, all of the characters in the story end up in a very different place than they started out. But despite all the chaos and upending of lives, there’s a sense of hopefulness in the end. Was there a message there or were you just aiming for happily ever after for the sake of the story?

Cameraman-lgI guess one message is that life can really screw with you, and things are going to happen that make you feel like you’ve lost everything, that you simply don’t have the strength to start over, much less be hopeful about the future. But short of crawling into a hole until you die, there’s really no other choice but to dust yourself off and try again – but it can take WORK. The other message is that no one is immune to falling in love, no matter what their situation. It’ll sneak up and grab you by the balls when you’re not looking. Despite this being the key to all romance stories—the fantasy of love coming along and knocking you on your ass—how the character handles it is what makes it interesting. There’s a reality to it that everyone can relate to, no matter how different we all are.

Do you think some readers will be unsettled by the subject matter of Guys On Top, since it steps outside the lines of a conventional romance story? Do you read your reviews?

I certainly considered that before publishing it, which is why I included the open relationship aspect in the cover blurb. I wanted people to know what they were getting into if they picked up this book. That might have backfired on me in a few cases, as some feedback I’ve gotten is that people expected it to be more of a straight on ménage story. But so far the response has been incredibly positive. I try not to spend too much time reading reviews because it keeps me locked in the mindset of this book rather than what I should be doing, which is write the next one! But people send me review links a lot, and I always read those. I have wonderful, intelligent readers, and am grateful they’ve been willing to trust me to take them off the beaten path with Guys On Top.

Can you give us any hints of what you have in store for your next book?

BodySurf-lgMy plan is to take it down to the beach for the next one, since summer is coming and I’m in that kind of mood. But I’ve been having so much fun doing the city settings as in Criminal Pleasures and Guys On Top, it’s been a tough call! But none of my books ever turn out exactly the way I plan initially, so I’m banking on the hope that the new characters will come to life and let me know what they want. And that’s all another way to say I have no clue yet! But I hope to gain one soon.

Thank you for dropping by, Darien!

What I’m Working On:

Writing Elis 5. Also kind of sort of writing Waverly 8.

I'm not inclined to resign to maturity.
