New Release – Rebellion: A River Wolfe Story

IT’S HERE, IT’S HERE, IT’S HERE!

(I’m excited. I might be the only one, but I had loads of fun with this story.)

If River is a story about what it’s like being in a body where you don’t belong and fighting that with every fiber of your being, Rebellion is about what it’s like to recognize you’re living a lie and can choose another path.

Without further ado, here is the blurb and buying/reading info.

rebellion-cover

Rebellion follows werewolf Daryl Marsden as he rediscovers River, the wolf he changed into a human girl three years ago.

Haunted by past mistakes and the need to right them now, Daryl struggles hide the truth behind the night he changed the white wolf and to pass along the rules and history given to him by his father: assimilate with humans, hide what you truly are. But River defies his plans, instead awakening the wolf in him, leaving Daryl with the choice of following the path he’s been forced on or giving in to his true nature.

Buy on Payhip

The story takes place during the first half of River, from Daryl Marsden’s POV–there are a collection of scenes from the book that appear from his point of view, and then a chunk of the story is sort of “lost scenes” that never made it into the book (you’ll see when you get there). As such, it’s more of a companion to the novel.

So this is the short (er, novella) I’d hoped to include with the re-release of River but hadn’t been well enough to write.  It’s no longer feasible to add it to existing editions of the book being sold–it’s hella-long and would increase the paperback’s size and price a lot, so as mentioned previously, I’m doing a special week-long event where you can read it free, and then it’ll be for sale only. Daily from Monday March 16 to Thursday March 19, a new part will be posted. It’ll stay live through Friday, and then come down again.

If you want to read immediately, you can buy a copy in my online shop. Remember, I can’t sell to EU countries, but you can also buy through Payhip as they’re taking care of VAT for me.

I’m undecided as to whether or not it’ll be available elsewhere later.

Patrons: you still have access to this. You don’t need to buy, PDF EPUB and MOBI are available here.

This story is not standalone.

(I made that big letters so you can’t miss it.)

River_2014-smIt doesn’t make sense without having read the novel, and I didn’t bother trying to make it accessible to newbies. You can buy River on Kindle, Kobo, Nook, OmniLit, Smashwords, iTunes, Payhip, and direct and you’ve got the weekend to read and catch up. If buying direct or on Payhip, enter the coupon code “rebellion” (no quotes) to save 25%.

Another argument in favour of getting the current edition of River: the scenes in Rebellion that line up with River’s previously seen POV are based on the 2014 version and not the old one. Scenes and dialogue changed. So don’t complain if it doesn’t match the 2006 version. 😛

If soundtracks are your thing, that posts on Sunday.

Also, this contains mature subject matter. River is YA, I guess, due to the age of the protag, so this should be as well, but I’d label Rebellion age 14+. I *think* anyone reading my blog is likely an adult, but just an FYI, read it before handing it to your twelve-year-old. It’s darker than River.

The title comes from a specific line of Gray’s in the latter fifth of the novel: “I still have no idea what possessed him to rebel like that.” Daryl’s story, from the time he was fourteen and changed her, straight through to when he finds her again, is about a building rebellion. This story chronicles a glimpse of it.

An Update About Rebellion

rebellion-kindleSo that River Wolfe short story I told you about, Rebellion, is in progress still, and I’ve got a better sense now about what I’m doing with it.

The thing is, it’s long.

Hella-long. Because of course it is, I can’t fucking write short stories. *sigh*

It’s not so much a short story as it is a novella and I envision it coming in at around 20-25K. I’m squeezing it in around my very busy work schedule, which is why it isn’t done yet.

After debating it myself and batting it around with other people, I’ve decided it’ll temporarily be free for a few days (serialized, as it’s divided into four sections), and then I’ll take it down and have it for sale instead. I debated a tip jar but those aren’t very effective and a bitch has got to get paid for the amount of time I’ve sunk into this thing.

Right now the tentative schedule* looks like this:

  • Rebellion will be available to Patrons of the Snarky Arts exclusively for a week or two.
  • March 13, the book will be added for sale to my online shop (and Payhip for shoppers in EU countries); like 9 Crimes, this story is NOT remotely standalone, I may not sell on other sites.
  • Starting Monday, March 16, a new part will post to my blog every day through Thursday, March 19.
  • The story will stay up through Friday for people to catch up (possibly Saturday).
  • Saturday/Sunday March 21/22 it will come down from the blog and be for sale.

I’ll be selling it for $2.99 as that’s what my novellas usually go for. (There might MIGHT be a surprise included at the end too, I’m still debating.)

River_2014-smIt’s also not standalone. I am writing it with the assumption that you’ve read River.

This means you’ve got about a month to buy the first book and get caught up. You can find it for $3.99 on Kindle, Kobo, Nook, OmniLit, Smashwords, iTunes, Payhip, and direct. (If you buy direct or on Payhip and want to save $1, enter the coupon code “rebellion” (no quotes) at checkout.) There’s also paperback via Amazon.

If you’re not sure if you’ll like it, um, here are some people who did?

*”tentative schedule” because things are rough right now; I have a bunch of upcoming doctor appointments and due to some med changes, there’s a chance my illness is going to get bad again soon. Plus I have a fuckton of editing on my plate for the next four weeks, which zaps a lot of my brain that I use for writing. Please don’t yell at me if the schedule changes, ‘kay?

A Man-Wolf, Hellhound, and Quest for Something Shiny

BiteMeST

Because fanservice short stories are awesome…

Bite Me: A Stranger Things Story

It’s hard not to be resentful when someone comes along and takes everything over, and Billy has had enough. Just because someone saved your life doesn’t mean they own it.

Set between Time Heals and the unpublished Death Knell, this story focuses on Billy the man-wolf (not wolf-man) and his uneasy relationship with Noth, the young hellhound with whom he must now share all that’s dear to him.

My good friend and partner in eviltry, Dina James, wants a shiny thing. A demon. Well, a demon statue. Okay, technically a gargoyle.

If you don’t know Dina, I am very sad for you, because she is the most evil person I know. She’s the other half of the Evil League of Evil Writers and none of the big fundraisers there would happen without her. Plus she talks me off of ledges and sends me yarn.

So when Dina wants a shiny thing, she should get it.

She’s offering a short story set in her Stranger Things world about Billy, everyone’s favourite man-wolf (not wolf-man). If you enjoy it, please consider putting some pennies in the tip jar. I mean, she’s saying this is a free story just for fans, and it is, but I’m not her and I can tell you to give her money for it if I want. And I am. A dollar or two is helpful.

If you haven’t read her Stranger Things novels–All Wounds and Time Heals–I am even more sad for you because they are out of print. But I think you can follow the story without having read them. The book blurbs are still on her site if you want an idea.

Wherein We Meet Simona

New Soulless chapter! Readers officially meet Ani’s hot-chick-in-leather-pants friend, Simona.

A friend who read this years and years ago, when I first wrote it (circa 2009 or so?) commented that he found Simona very Zara-like. And that was her purpose: to be the typical UF heroine. In any other book Simona would’ve been the protagonist. She’s hot, she’s snarky, she’s sexualized, she’s powerful. But this is a book where I wanted to do something different, and so I did.

I had good feedback on the book way back when, though there were a few remarks about how Ani was oddly difficult to connect to. And, quite frankly, that’s the point of it. She herself says she’s difficult to connect with–she quite literally has no friends and fakes any social interaction she can’t get out of. Those of you familiar with my work are likely aware I write very close first person, and Ani is no different.

If you don’t like her, don’t worry–there’s Rafe. He’s hot.

I won’t be updating here for the entire serial, just the first few chapters as a reminder while things get started. If you want to be kept up to date about new installments, you can subscribe directly to chapters on the site and have notices delivered to your inbox.

Soulless Begins

Soulless_medWell, here we go!

Two chapters a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting today. There are forty-something chapters total (85K words).

It’s…an odd sort of book–Ani is a very non-traditional UF heroine. She’s a very internal character rather than snarky and full of banter; she doesn’t kick ass or swing a sword around (at least not well); she does not look hot in leather pants. She says the wrong thing, is completely socially inept, and hides from fate rather than chase it.

Also, she can eat the souls of monsters.

You can subscribe to chapters by email, if you want them delivered directly to your inbox. Coarse language, violence, some sex–you know, the usual. If you enjoy, please consider dropping some pennies in the tip jar on the site. I promise I won’t use it to buy cocaine.

What I’m Working On:

Writing Elis 5. Also kind of sort of writing Waverly 8.

I'm not inclined to resign to maturity.
