Playing the hero is so last century.

Four and a half years after the shattering events of Bloodlines, the North American supernatural underworld is still in shambles. Zara Lain–vampire, assassin, and snarktastic bitch extraordinaire–is as busy as ever, tracking down new, still buried bloodsuckers who have no makers around to retrieve them. Granted, all this heroic business is clashing with her reputation, but she’s not the type to break promises, especially ones made to the only person she’d never dream of letting down–herself.

But when you’ve been alive three hundred years and kill people for a living, taking some downtime to mentor new vampires isn’t exactly easy.

With a terrible–for Zara–sense of timing, Demon Hunters have decided this would be an excellent opportunity to help control the supernatural population by hunting the same orphaned vampires she’s trying to save. Worse still, one of the Hunters won’t stop hitting on her, there’s a bitchy faerwolf in town, her newest “baby” vampire is a pacifist who won’t drink blood, and, oh yeah, a horde of zombies just crawled out of their graves, stinking their way through the streets of Zara’s city.

Some nights it just does not pay to drag a girl’s undead ass out of bed.
