As new chapters are posted, old ones will be summarized here for long time readers.
Sixteen year old Genevieve Weist has been feeling like she's been followed for awhile now. Finally, one night, her silent watcher appears and chases her while she's out for a walk.
Her friends, Levi and Stephie, convince her to go out and confront the guy. Turns out she fails to surprise him, and he grabs her and threatens to her. Thankfully, her best friend Levi is there, as planned, and helps her out.
The next day at school, we get a glimpse of Gen's long-time crush, Janine, who doesn't appear to reciprocate Gen's feelings. Genevieve ends up working on a project with a new student, Meredith, and the two make arrangements to continue the work at Merri's house that weekend.
Later, after school has let out, Hayden badgers Sage into attending his younger brother, Levi's basketball game, though she's reluctant to accept because she knows of the crush he has on her.
Levi is surprised to see Sage at his game that night, and follows her afterward in the hopes of catching up and thanking her for going. On her way home, she's attacked by four guys, though she smoothly fights them off, much to Levi's shock.
After a highly disturbing nightmare (involving both her own murder and a homework reminder) Genevieve awakens and heads the Merri's house. Unfortunately, it seems Merri is friends with the creep who was following Gen.
Gen figures both Merri and Michael are crazy when they tell her assassins are after her because she's to play some important part in the coming apocalypse. Lending weight to their story, however, is a group of men who come after Gen on her way home. Gen is helped by Michael. Once she reaches home, Levi drops by and reveals what he saw the other night with Sage.
Gen heads out later that night and meets with Michael. She tells him about Sage, and the next day (at his house, along with Merri), they get Sage to come over. Michael surprises Sage by attacking her, and she is easily bested. She accepts what the others tell her about who/what she is, and afterwards heads to Hayden's. Tensions arise between them and Levi.
At Michael's, everyone is attacked by some gun-weilding assassin guy. Michael is shot, but lives.
Sage is nearly strangled, but Merri shoots the guy repeatedly, then the two of them hide the body. Gen is wholly freaked out by it all, and she and Michael have an almost bonding-like moment, though he still insults and belittles her a few times. That night, Gen tries again on her own to extinguish a candle with her mind, and finally succeeds.
The next day is Friday, and it's the end of the school day. Sage and Gen are arguing about heading to Michael's that evening, when Sage receives a strange phone call from Hayden's number. The caller doesn't identify himself, but suggests something has happened to Hayden. The girls head to the parking lot and find Sage's boyfriend near death in his car. At the hospital later, Sage is silent and alone while waiting to hear word about Hayden's condition. Although he turns out to be fine, she vows she will do something to keep it from ever happening again.
The group meets at Michael's, where Merri and Gen to a spell that lets Merri know what their attackers are planning, though she temporarily passes out. Michael shows genuine concern for her well being. Gen figures everyone is doomed.
Early in the morning, Gen and Sage head to Michael's, where they form a plan: the group will go to where the baddies are hiding and end it once and for all. They stop at the hospital on the way there for Sage to see Hayden, and Gen calls her dad to say goodbye, just in case. A fight ensues at the hideout of the bad guys, though Gen has a spell keeping the others protected from harm. Things go badly, however, and she is almost killed. Though Michael had promised to keep her safe, he noticably hesitates for a few moments, but eventually helps her. Gen loses her place in the spellbook, and has to resort to trying a random spell as those around her are being hurt. After she reads the words, they find the remianing baddies have disappeared, and Michael freaks out. Nonetheless, they're all okay.
They head back to the hosptial, with Sage and Gen planning to visit Hayden, only to learn he died a half hour earlier from a blood clot. The funeral is held a few days later. And so ends Part One.
Part Two begins with Gen being pulled out of school to go somewhere with Michael. He reveals he needs to get her a spellbook, but the owner will only sell it to another witch. The witchy owner is named Krysta, and she gives Gen some serious wiggins. Michael gets the book, and Krysta grows very forward and flirtatous with him. Gen dubs her a total skank. They head back to Michael's, but before they go inside he confronts her on what is likely post-traumatic-stress-disorder that she's been dealing with: nightmares, loss of appetite, unwillingness to do anything magic related. In the house, Gen sees Sage for the first time since the funeral. Merri drops by later as well. Shortly thereafter, someone comes to the door--a young man named Thad who tells the girls he's there to bring Michael some info about "the other one of them."
The girls are none too pleased that Michael has been keeping things from them. He and Thad reveal that there is a fourth CotA, The Immortal, that Michael has been looking for. Thad knows someone who once knew her, but he won't give Michael any details. Thad and Merri flirt a little, but Michael makes him leave. Much later, Merri is walking home, and we see more of what she really is.
Gen finds herself having more and more nightmares, similar to the one she had several chapters ago. She tells Merri the next day, and they decide to start investigating things without telling Michael, including the phrase "The Brethren" mentioned in Gen's dream. Merri also offers to help Gen get over her fears of using magic by teaching her to focus and meditate. The two of them get ready to head out to a club that night with some people, including Gen's new crush Peyton.
Michael is at the club to pick up a few drinks at the bar and probably a one night stand. He runs into Merri, who is there with Gen and the others. After a cryptic talk, Merri tries to sneak Thad's number from his phone, but he openly gives it to her. He gets a call later from Krysta and heads to her place for some wild and crazy monkey lovin'. Meanwhile, Merri finally calls Thad and asks him to show up at the club, not revealing who she is. While she's waiting, one of Levi's friends flirts with her and offers her drugs, and she sends him outside under the pretense of meeting him later. Thad shows up, they get along and have sex in his car, only very little cuddling can insue because he expresses worry Michael put her up to calling him for information, and, insulted, Merri leaves. Outside the club, Levi's friend Warren is approached by a mysterious figure.
At Michael's, a day later, Gen and Merri are working together. Gen asks Merri to hang out with her, Levi, and Stephie that night. Thad shows up to tell Michael a way he can contact someone who knew the fourth CotA, then when Merri apologizes for freaking out on him the nigth before, he asks her out. She has plans, he thinks she's brushing him off, so he leaves. That night at Gen's, Levi, Merri, and Stephie are over to watch movies. Levi overhears mention of Sage and gets mad at Gen for not telling him she'd seen her a few times. On the news, the group learns that Warren's body was found outside the club.
The story picks up a week later. Gen, Merri, Levi, and others are at the school Halloween dance. Gen is shocked when Janine actually talks to her. Sage shows up, which pisses off Levi. Though Gen, Merri, and Peyton try talking to Sage, she abruptly leaves when a certain song is played. Levi explains to Gen that the song was hers and Hayden's. Sage takes off, and Gen and Peyton grow closer and admit feelings for one another. At his house much later, Levi is heading to bed when he overhears a noise in his brother's room. He finds Sage in there crying, and though his first instinct is to yell at her, he finds himself filled with grief, and instead offers her comfort.
Levi heads to Gen's house and confesses to her that he still has feelings for Sage, and is worried she might try to hurt herself. Gen resolves to ask Michael for help, because Sage seems to listen to him. He requests Sage come to his house, and brings her up to the roof. It is there he reveals that he was actually the one who killed Hayden.
A fight ensues, in which Sage finally gets the upperhand and has the opportunity to kill Michael. She hesitates, however, and he pulls a gun on her. Expecting to die, Sage gives up, and Michael reveals then that he wasn't, in fact, responsible for Hayden's death, but wanted her to attack him to see if she'd have the will to actually kill him. He accuses her of having a death wish, and expresses he knows exactly how she feels about Hayden's death. Sage realizes he's lost someone, and after some prompting, he reveals his wife and son were murdered. They eventually come to an arrangement where they'll discuss their respective losses now and then, in an effort to help Sage deal with her grief. Later, after Sage is gone, Krysta arrives at Michael's. Their power games include a bout of sex, and he makes it clear that though he knows she can't be trusted, he'll deal with whatever happpens. Meanwhile, Sage heads to the cemetery to grieve alone at her boyfriend's grave.
Based on the information Thad gave them, Michael drives Gen, Merri, and Sage to see David Shaw, and they don't realize that Levi witnessed them leaving together. David Shaw tells them about his former lover, Natalya aka The Immortal and works with Michael on drawing a likeness of her for their reference. Merri goes to visit Thad and tries to win back his trust. When Michael, Gen, and Sage leave, they stop first at the airport to pick up a friend of Michael's named Finn. Later, when Michael is driving Gen home alone, after some pestering from her he reveals that Finn is a medium he has asked to come to Newhaven to try to contact Hayden for Sage.
Michael makes plans with Finn to try to contact Hayden for Sage, and decide to involve Genevieve, unbeknownst to both Gen and Sage. Sage invites Gen and Merri to stay at her place while her mother is out with friends, and there Gen meets a couple of telepaths who tell her how to find out more about The Brethren and what else Michael knows. Unfortunately, it will involve breaking in to Michael's place, and she makes plans with Merri and Sage to do so.
Gen, Sage, and Merri break into Michael's place and steal some books. They learn one big secret he's been keeping from them: there's an old organization, The Brethren, that is dedicated to killing them, and that many prophecies point to the fact that they'll succeed. Michael calls Gen to his place for a seance, where Finn tries to contact Hayden. He fails, though privately suggests Gen look into finding someone who can contact The Serpent.
A Christmas, Gen spends some time with her girlfriend, Peyton, and realizes then that Peyton hasn't actually told her family about the relationship. Levi drops off a gift at Sage's that Hayden had put a downpayment on before he died--a "promise" ring. She goes to Michael, and they discuss their dead loved ones. Michael reveals why Finn is in town, but says he wasn't able to contact Hayden. Pissed off, Sage goes to Gen and yells at her for keeping the secret. Genevieve decides to follow the lead Finn gave her, and the two are led to a young boy who has the ability to connect with people in the afterlife. Instead of doing that, he decides to offer Sage the chance to change one decision in her life that could alter Hayden's fate, as well as twenty-four hours to change things back. She decides to never date him in the first place, and leaves the house to find he's alive.
Sage has some trouble adjusting to this altered world, but is happy to have Hayden back. She soon realizes that a lot is different--Michael and the others don't know she's the warrior yet, and her family was nearly killed by The Brethren. Her mother was seriously injured and her younger sister is about to be taken off of life support. Sage goes to Michael's to get help from them to fix things, when they're all attacked by The Brethren again and Genevieve is killed. Sage realizes that she can't trade Hayden's life for so many others--despite what she wants--and goes to see him one last time before setting things back the way they were. She doesn't tell anyone what happened.
Merri goes out on a double date with Thad, Gen, and Peyton, but violent visions have been bothering her, and she contacts Michael about it. He refuses to let her look into them. Later that evening, Thad gives her a book of poetry and hints that he knows there's more to her past than she's letting on.
On Valentine's Day, Peyton confronts Gen about a flower she had sent to her classroom for her. Since Peyton refuses to even budge out of the closet, and Gen's tired of secrets, the two break up. Later that evening, Gen finds her mother leaving her father due to an affair. After reaching her breaking point, Gen decides to head to Michael's and get everything out in the open, including the fact that the girls broke into his house. He eventually reveals that the person supposedly set to die is her. Sage finally tells them about what happened at Christmas with Hayden, and how technically Gen was killed in another reality, so perhaps that validated the prophecy.
Merri once again brings up the serial killings from her visions, but he won't listen to her. Gen and Finn hatch a plan to head to the club where some of the murders took place to see if they can contact a victim and find out what happened. While there, they find a body. Gen calls Michael to let him know what happened, and then she and Finn head back to Michael's. While there, Finn drugs and attempts to assault her. Michael and Merri arrive minutes after Sage, who stopped the assault. After having Gen preform a mysterious spell, Michael books a plane ticket for Finn and takes him to a motel out of town. There he confronts him and kills him.
Genevieve awakens to find Merri watching over her, and only vaguely remembers the light before. When they read the newspaper and learn Finn is dead, she confronts Michael, who doesn't deny what he did. Back at school, Gen and Sage are approached by a police officer who is looking for a girl named Belle Swanson, who happens to look exactly like Merri.
After realizing Merri's been lying about herself, Gen goes to Krysta Guerin for help with a spell, and leaves with a pendant that can help detect lies. She confronts Merri about it, and Merri takes off. Michael finds her the following day at the bus station and promises to get rid of the police. They return to Michael's, when Sage and Gen arrive. A few minutes later, the police come and Gen leads them to Merri.
The police don't arrest Merri, but instead don't seem to recognize her. When they go, Gen reveals that she did a spell to keep people from recognizing Merri as Belle, although she's still pissed off about the lying. The next day, just as her crush Janine asks her out, Michael drags Gen shopping to get things for Merri, who will be living with him temporarily. When Merri returns from school, she sits down with Gen to discuss her past.
Merri reveals the abuse she went through early in her teens to protect her step-sister, and how she eventually murdered her stepfather/abuser. Gen feels horrible about how she treated her friend and for not trusting her. Later Merri realizes she'll have to tell Thad, and she expects that he'll reject her. Instead, he confesses he'll love her no matter what, and for the first time in her life, Merri feels safe. The following day, Gen goes to the others about the serial killings that Merri had been worried about, only to find that Levi has followed her to Michael's and wants to know what's going on.
They try to explain to Levi what's going on, but he doesn't believe them and leaves. They decide as a group to look into Merri's visions. They have Thad come over to help, and he brings a friend to join them. After determining they're looking for something supernatural in origin--a siren, to be exact, which came through a dimensional tear near the lake--they head to the club to look for it. Gen also has a date with Janine that gets interrupted, and she sees Levi there, though he won't speak to her. Gen is weakened by closing the tear, but doesn't have time to worry about it as they realize Levi followed her outside and might be the siren's next victim.
