Yes, I usually set things in small, Southern Ontario towns. The reasons being 1. Write what you know (and I know small, Southern Ontario towns, lol) and 2. I like my work set in Canada, and Ontario is as good a province as any (just don't tell Quebec I said that).
Most places in Canada seemed to have been named in one of two ways--either after a native word (which "Canada" itself is), or after a place in Europe, usually in the UK (for example, "New Westminster" in BC, or even the province of Nova Scotia: Nova=New, Scotia=Scotland). Newhaven is, apparently, a place in the UK, and I don't know of any towns in Ontario with that name, so voila, the little town of Newhaven, Ontario was born. Newhaven is situated about two hours drive from Toronto, Ontario. It's the largest of a few small villages and towns, that make up a municipality with a population of about 28, 000. Far on the outskirts of town are farms, some still functioning as such, others being sold for housing development. Up until recent years, the population was primarily Caucasion Christian, though being relatively close to Toronto, the past decade has brought more ethnic and cultural diversity. The town and surrounding area has a very low homicide rate--a murder occurs once every few years. Other violent crimes occur with a bit more frequency. Petty crime is up, usually due to bored teenagers. There is only one public high school in Newhaven, which is where our characters go. Two other smaller public high schools can be found outside of town, as well as a Catholic school. There is a college and university in the city not far from Newhaven, which is where the bulk of students in the area end up going. |
