Sophie Fund
As I've mentioned a few times, I have some worries about my dog's health. She's nine and a half years old, and she's the sweetest thing ever.
One of the reasons I was so upset about losing my other part time job was because I was trying to save up to pay for a much needed vet trip for her. Now my savings are shot and I'm scraping by month to month, so even a check-up is looking unlikely at this point--I can barely feed her and my cat.
Sophie has a lump on her chest and her behavior has been off lately, leading me to suspect something is wrong. This is a big part of why I've decided to go subscription only in the new year, and ever single dollar that comes in will be going towards Sophie getting properly checked out and treated. I've lost pets to illnesses before, despite thousands of dollars being spent to help them, and I don't know if I have it in me to watch it happen again. Not after what she and I have been through together the past few years.
Here's Sophie, for those who would like to meet her:

She's a beagle corgi cross. I've had her since she was seven weeks old. Here's her as a wee pup.

She also has a Dogbook profile 'cause I'm a nerd, and you can be her friend.
The first donation I've had in a couple of months came in the other day (thanks Jennifer!), so I've decided to start up a Sophie fund metre. I'll add to it whenever I have money left over after paying bills and groceries every month, and all donations received go towards it as well.
I'm aiming for $200 at this point (it shows zero on the widget, but that's because I set this up after the donation that just came in, so picture it with $20 in it), as that usually covers a check up and some basic tests. I'm not doing a big drive because I don't know for sure if the tumor is malignant or not. If it turns out she needs surgery, I'll do something a little bigger after I see what arrangements can be made (for example, my former vet allowed my ex and I to pay for our cat's bills over a six month period of time...which was good because it came to about $1500). When I was a little more flush with cash in the spring, I myself donated here and there to people whose pets had to go for major surgery, so I'm hoping that earned me and Sophie some good karma in case it comes to that for us.
If you value what you've read for free and haven't thrown in a tip, now would be a great time to do so.
For the record, I'm also trying to come up with some way of giving back to anyone who donates (new or former). Not sure what at this time...bonus short story? e-copy of my backlist? (That makes me nervous 'cause of my experiences with e-piracy, but we'll see.) Any ideas, gimme a shout 'cause I'm always open to hear them.
I'll keep everyone updated. Thanks for reading.

Skyla, I just donated the
Skyla,
I just donated the same amount as last time, a fifty. I'm glad to have been of any service to you and to that lovely dog of yours. (Thanks for posting some pictures) My family has no less than three cats, so I can understand the concerns you've stated above. I hope I've done some good.
Offtopic, I've finally got a computer again, so no more sponging off the relatives.

I saw that donation in my inbox and got all teary-eyed. You can't imagine how thankful I am. And you, my dear, are VIP for life. No matter what. Every chapter, always. And if there's anything you ever want, let me know. Early chapter. Spoilers. Pin-ups of the hot male characters. Maybe you can decide how best for me to torture Michael?
Seriously, you're amazing.
And yay for a new computer!

Skyla,
I got all teary-eyed myself when I read your reply. Thank you so much. I'm having a bit of a rough time at my house, and your words were really appreciated. It's amazing how far a little kindness goes.
I wouldn't dream of coming up with new ways for you to torture Michael. I'll leave that to the expert, I think.

That's so true. I was just having a conversation with another author about things on my blog...epiracy specifically. And she comes back to the question of why bother doing it--why do this job when people steal gleefully and you see no compensation for your work. It's so easy to want to throw in the proverbial towel sometimes, whether it's with writing or anything else in life. BUT...there is kindness. It may not be as prevalent as we wish, but it's those little moments of kindness from other people that can make the difference in someone's day. I have those moments of wanting to curl up and be a hermit, and never write another word for publication again. But it's the kindness of readers like you that makes writers like me pull words out of the air and shape it into a story. You make this job worth it.
Of course, this kindness shall not extend to Michael. He's on his own.
Sophie
I just donated - I meant to when I first saw the post and totally spaced - but I remembered, hopefully in time to do some good. At our house, we have a dog and three cats and although they drive me insane, I can't imagine life without them.
Good luck Sophie!

Thank you! You're such a sweetheart. Everyone is. My faith in humanity is semi-restored--I told Dina that my heart possibly grew a couple of sizes today...
Once PayPal transfers the money into my bank account, I'm booking her an appointment and will let everyone know how it turns out.

Hi Skyla-I've not been around in awhile but I saw your post on facebook this morning and realized that I had a few extra bucks to throw your way...so I did!
Hope it helps and posts okay-last time I did a donation through paypal it messed up-let me know if it does something wonky. Us gals gotta look out for one another! Good luck with everything and don't lose faith in humanity, there are still a few of us blind-optimists and do-gooders yet!

An update, folks: Sophie has been to the vet! She had her "senior's" checkup (everyone was like, "OMG, she's a senior?"), her needles, and they had a look at her tumours (yes, there's a second one). Sophie is well! The tumours seem to be normal, fatty ones that older dogs get. We've measured them and they'll be monitored for any changes. She'll be going back for more tests in a few months when she turns ten. Yay!

Awesome!
It's good to hear that she'll be okay! Fingers crossed that she'll continue to get better.
If one person gives another person five dollars out of kindness do you think that person will give up the five dollars for someone who needs it more?
Answer: Probably fracking not!
Thanks for the update. It's
Thanks for the update. It's good to know she's doing well.

That is so good to hear that
That is so good to hear that she is doing well, I know how it feels when your dog gets older and every change makes you worry about the worst. I'm so glad that you were able to bring her in, I know that had to lift a lot of worry off of your shoulders to hear that she healthy. She is so adorable!
Skyla, i wish i would have
Skyla, i wish i would have read this before she went to the Vet! and i would have donated. Nevertheless, i believe i still can right? Sophie is beautiful. i am a huge animal lover. i plan to open an animal shelter, once i get a couple acres of land, so i can build a ranch! I have 2 puppies and a cat, and i couldnt imagine not being able to get them better. Did you know there is medical insurance for your pets? i dont know who it is through, but i am sure you can google it. my friend pays $20 a month, and it covers vet bills and surgeries if needed. I think that's pretty awsome. i have been meaning to look into it myself. Just thought i'd let you know!
I looked into health
I looked into health insurance for her when she was a puppy because I had a very sick cat whom cost about $4000 in a few years on her various illnesses, but never got to purchasing it, and now I'm lucky if I have $20 a month sometimes.
And yes, anyone can still throw money in the pot--she has another check-up in May, and I'm saving...the "just in case this is bad" thought is always in the back of my mind because I've had vet trips for pets where I've heard "Oh, yeah, um, she needs to go to a specialist NOW and it'll be several hundred dollars."
My when-I-win-the-lottery dream is to open a shelter for abused women that allows pets, because so many women don't leave abusers due to fear for their pet's safety (my ex beat and starved Sophie when she was briefly out of my custody, so I know that fear) but they can't take them to shelters. I'd have a shelter to allow women, children, and pets, though. As it is, I'd like to foster pets for women moving to shelters who can't take their pets, but I live in a very, very tiny bachelor apt where I'm not supposed to have animals to begin with, so I have to wait until I can afford a bigger place one day.

i totally understand.
i will see about donating as soon as i can. I am always willing to help a fellow animal lover! <3 That is a great dream you have, i love helping people, and animals! I need to find a couple of acres, but i probably won't be able to get it until i am at least in my late 30's.
but the day i do, it will be amazing!
