We pick up about five-six months after the end of Part Two.
So this chapter was about recapping the big changes at the end of the last part, explaining how things have gone the past few months, and setting up some things to come. First chapters are often fairly awkward, even in an established series. While this one came fairly easily to me, I was pretty much stuck afterward because I wasn’t sure exactly what the first arc would be. There are little threads throughout this chapter, though (hint: Gen) that show what the next few will be dealing with.
The biggest problem I had with this chapter is being nice to Janine. I named her years ago...well before I started associating homewrecking skanks with that name. So I have a whole lot of trouble not killing the character outright, even though she's nice enough, because I loathe that name. I would have renamed her, but Part One is already out in print and that, so it seems a little late.
Anyway, we find out the Gen and Janine (or Janinevieve) have been together for a few months and they're getting nekkid. While I see Part One as about origins and Part Two about love, Part Three is about changes. The girls are growing up, and major changes are in store for them as the story continues. Well, maybe it’s more about sex than anything else. I have no idea where that conversation between Sage and Michael came from. She turned out to be really talkative—I couldn’t get her to shut up. Neither could Michael, poor guy.
I know there was a lack of Merri in this chapter, but she’ll be front and center in the next two chapters.
Feel free to share your thoughts either here or at the forum. What do you think is in store for the characters in Part Three? Do you feel bad at all for Michael? Anyone besides Jeroen want to smack poor Genevieve at this point?
