Well, she was never entirely out of her comfort zone--she knew her best friend was around the corner. And she's a teenager, and therefore stupidly thinks she's invincible anyway.
But I said above that she doesn't think of herself as strong. I didn't say she wasn't. She's the kind of person who can't imagine that, if knocked down, she'd get back up again, but she is. That's something most people don't automatically know about themselves, regardless of how others perceive them.
As for writing, I don't really have a strict process. I've been writing professionally for several years now, and I just sit down and write.
I never would have started with serials. Early on, I had a tendency to write myself into corners, and I was bad with deadlines. It was only after writing four or five novels that I started having online serials because I could be fairly confident that I knew what I was doing. CotA has had a fair amount of planning that went into it because it's been sitting in my head for so long. I wouldn't say I perfect chapters before posting them--occasionally, they go through a few rewrites until they feel right, but more often then not, I post whatever I originally wrote plus a bit of editing. I don't recommend that for everyone, but the way I write, my final draft tends to be fairly close to my original draft.
Congratulations on getting so much written on your novel! The best thing, in my opinion, is just to get to the end, then put that draft aside and work on something else for a few months before coming back to it. That gives you distance and perspective, so you can figure out if it would work better in another POV. Good luck, and thanks for reading!
