I'm not sure what to say in the commentary that I haven't already babbled about in the FAQ. I had a story sitting around with characters I loved, but no idea what to do with it because it wasn't fitting in the format I'd been trying to write it in. Then it suddenly hit me--when I was pondering running a second serial concurrent with Children of the Apocalypse that I could use my little story, Curio Killed the Cat.
I take on the first person POV of various characters throughout the story. We start with Briar because she's the one I'm most comfortable with. I originally came up with the idea to do a hoodoo spellcaster in the shop because I really became fascinated with the practice when I did research for Krysta in a CotA short story. I knew a bit about it before, but I got right into African Diasporic Religions and practices. There tends to be a lot of fear (IMO, steeped in racism) around practices like hoodoo, so I wanted to create this character who was kinda fun and silly. After reading personal accounts from rootworkers about the problems they had with occult shops run by people who believed in karma, I thought there was potential for a lot of fun with this cast of characters.
Lilith was actually the first character I came up with, though. I'll talk more about her next time (when she has POV scenes).
Okay, so I babbled a whole lot here anyway without intending to. See you next week! (I hope.)
So what are your thoughts? You've met Briar and Liam if you caught the short story set in the CotA-verse, Wheel of Fortune. Have any favourite characters so far? Comment either here or at the forum!
