Birthday Wish List
It's my birthday a week from today. Well into my twenties, I taped a birthday list on my refrigerator, though I rarely got anything from my list.
I'm turning twenty-seven. If you don't think that sounds old, please remember that my boyfriend is twenty-two. Believe me, it feels old.
Here is what I currently would like for my bday:
- Babies (my own).
- A house.
- A kitten, preferably with all its vet bills paid for me.
- A wedding (my own).
- Death unto my enemies.
- Competency from all the people I have to deal with.
- A truck load of money.
- Everyone in the universe to buy three copies of all of my books.
- My WiPs to write themselves.
- A third season of Twin Peaks.
- An extremely large bottle of vodka.
- A honeymoon in Tokyo.
- Kennedy from BtVS to die horribly and Tara to live happily ever after with Willow.
- All ebook pirates to die of syphilis.
- One or two more babies (my own).
- Children of the Apocalypse made into a TV show, and not cancelled.
- A vegetable garden.
- Super powers.
- Health benefits with my job.
- World peace.
I'm iffy about that last one.
Please get cracking, folks--I'm almost thirty and death is certainly close afterward.

#1 Good List
I think most are doable. If you want a third season of Twin Peaks, you may have to write it yourself. Re: e-pirates & syphillis... I go to college, I'm sure I could find a sorority girl that can help you out. Especially if you had the big bottle of vodka.
#2 And, by the way, this is
And, by the way, this is Amanda Devine (Devinewriter on Twitter). A non-douchebag author. On most days.
#3 Twin Peaks was the one time I
Twin Peaks was the one time I considered writing fanfic. It's just not allowed to end like that.
#4 I agree. I was seriously mad
I agree. I was seriously mad when it ended. It was brilliantly written. And I had a bit of a crush on Kyle M. I lived in WA from '98-'02, so I used to make my hubby take me to Snoqualmie where some scenes were filmed. (Northern Exposure was filmed in Roslyn, WA, about an hour away from there, too.)
Back in '99, ABC had another series I liked- Wolf Lake. Did you catch it? It was set in Washington state, too. I was living there at the time. Anyway, It was good & they show it on Sci-Fi sometimes. I was irked when they dropped it, too. *sigh*
#5 I was seven years old (nearly
I was seven years old (nearly eight) when the pilot first aired...and I was MADLY in love with Agent Cooper. He was just so perfect. Brilliant and quirky and honourable... Kids my age liked members of New Kids on the Block--I had a crush on a guy from a David Lynch show LOL.
I remember the finale was on late on a school night and my mum taped it, telling me I could watch it in the morning. Of course, I could see the TV from the end of my bed, so I sat up and watched it. When that final scene happened, I had my hands clamped over my mouth--terrified that my mum would hear me and know I was awake--and I sobbed all night long.
I didn't see Wolf Lake--my mum used to watch it, though, and she quite liked it.
What's funny is that I saw the trailer for ABC's new show Happy Town and they started it with, "From the network that brought you Twin Peaks" and of course my first thought was, "Which they then cancelled?" Not the way to make a good first impression on a TP fan LOL.
#6 You were 7/8? Now I feel
You were 7/8? Now I feel old, LOL. I was in high school & I seemed to be the only girl in my school that watched the show, so I had nobody to discuss it with. Cooper was dreamy. I had the poster in my bedroom. Oh yeah, I was awesome. I cried when the show ended, too. :(
LOL re: Happy Town. ABC has a bad habit of canceling thought-provoking/paranormal shows. (TP, WL, etc.) I thought the same thing.
There's a show called Eastwick that looks somewhat entertaining if you like witches. However, it may end up being a little too "Charmed" for my taste. It's loosely based on the '80's movie, Witches of Eastwick. l enjoyed that movie. Jack Nicholson was awesome as the devil.
One of the teen actors from Wolf Lake is now Stefan on the new WB series Vampire Diaries. My 'tween daughter made me watch it with her. Ugh. It was okay, I guess. It's like Twilight for TV. She's going to make me take her to New Moon, I just know it.
I should get Twin Peaks on DVD & show her what a good show is like.
#7 My third grade teacher used
My third grade teacher used to crack jokes all the time about my Twin Peaks addiction. I had my mum and my aunt to discuss it with--everyone else thought I was weird, LOL. I didn't have a poster but I had the soundtracks and Laura Palmer's secret diary. I'd say the benefit of seeing TP when one is older is that one would be less likely to be utterly terrified of Bob...as I am. So many years later and he still freaks the hell out of me.
I don't have cable so I don't know when I'll get to see any new shows (I walk to my friend's place to watch my usual ones). I'm cautiously hopeful about Eastwick--I loved that movie.
My mum called to tell me she was watching Vampire Diaries...she said, "It's just like that book you hate! It's pretty lame. You should watch it so you can make fun of it."
There's the Twin Peaks gold edition--it's the entire series in one box set, including both the aired pilot and the original two hour one, with a ton of other extras. I think there's also a recipe for cherry pie. Mmm, pie...
#8 You had Laura Palmer's diary?
You had Laura Palmer's diary? LOL I had it, too! Teeheehee. OK- I can raise the TP geek factor for you. I played "Laura's Song" at my piano recital. Hilarious.
And Bob still freaks my s*#t out. Seriously. *shudders*
I actually have not read the Vampire Diaries. I was a die-hard Anne Rice fan & once you've read her, it's hard to read other books about vampires. I met her in New Orleans once (hubby is from there) & she's very nice, down to earth.
TP gold collection? Awesome. I have the Northern Exposure Parka Pack that my husband bought me last year for Yule.
True Blood is good if you can get the DVD's from the library. Dexter rocks, too.
Now I want pie. I make a killer Hoosier Sugar Cream pie. Mmm...
#9 That's awesome. I never took
That's awesome. I never took piano lessons, but I learned to play things by ear, and the Laura Palmer theme was one of the first ones I figured out LOL.
Know what I always wanted? Agent Cooper's tapes to Diane. My mum tried to find them for me but apparently most stores didn't cater to David Lynch fanatics.
My friend burns True Blood for me on DVD...she takes good care of me (except when she decides to be evil and try to make me read Twilight). I saw the first two seasons of Dexter, but then I lived with a sociopath for too many years so it kind of lost it's appeal, LOL, but it was a well done show.
#10 Oh, David Lynch. He's a
Oh, David Lynch. He's a freaking genius. Did you look on eBay? They may have them.
True Blood. I read all of the Sookie S. books. They are good. I read the first 9 books this summer. I am in love with Eric. I really hope they explore the Eric/Sookie storyline. Alexander Skarsgard isn't bad, either. Eric trumps Edward any day of the week.
Yeah, I read Twilight with my daughter. Bleh. Steph Meyer is worshiped by teens the world over now. It's funny... I always wonder what makes a story SO big that it becomes a worldwide phenomenon. It really wasn't all that original. Girl meets vampire, falls in love, etc. Idk, but it worked for her. Now angels are all the rage.
I'm really irked b/c I am writing a book @ fallen angels (and I'm Pagan... go figure), only to find out that they're coming in. Grrr!!! I hate it when certain book themes become oversaturated. It's tough to stand out, you know?
My ex-boss is a True Crime writer & she actually solved a crime re: a serial killer. She was an investigative journalist for the Indy Star & a man approached her re: a book about unsolved murders in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was nice to her, they hung out, etc., then she noticed that he knew way too much. She uncovered evidence & found out he was, indeed, the murderer of three people. Scary stuff.
#11 Although Joss Whedon is my
Although Joss Whedon is my most obvious influence, David Lynch is a heavy one too...because I always leave loose ends and don't necessarily explain everything at the end LOL. I remember this one interview with him where he talked about not explaining his films, and how if he explained them, they'd lose some of their magic (like a magician revealing his secret). That was a really powerful statement for me, although when I applied it myself to a book--where I thought the explanation was totally obvious--I got nothing but confused reader emails LOL.
I haven't read the TB books--with reading so much for work and writing, I don't read for pleasure too often. Twilight...is painful. The creepy themes and stuff aside, just the writing itself is horrid. When a friend and I went to pick up my boyfriend from the airport, though, I read random passages aloud just for entertainment purposes.
Mundania has a really great angel YA paranormal romance coming out next year that I contracted called Fallen. I'm still getting a whole lot of vampire stuff in slush (every cover letter says, "This is original!" and I'm like...no it's not! LOL).
That's pretty freaky about your former boss--glad the guy was caught, though.
#12 Oh, Joss. How do I love
Oh, Joss. How do I love thee, let me count the ways... I'm a huge Buffy fan. Huge. I was a big Buffy-Angel supporter. I cried when the show ended. I wanted more. I also thought Oz was awesome. Willow. Xander. *sigh*
That's amazing re: Fallen.. I write paranormal romance. It's my favorite genre to write. My angel series has a different twist & not about a fallen angel. I've always been obsessed with "Watchers." I'm also introducing a succubus... it's a lot of fun. It's kinda "angelpunk" LOL. So far, I'm titling it "Air" or "Wind." Each different book will have to do with the four elements. (Earth, Air, FIre, Water) It'll kick-arse.
Vampires. I like vampire stories, but the way they are just flooding in... wow. I'm not even touching that subject. Twilight. Wow. I don't even know where to begin. I remember reading book #4. It was 843 pages of "I want my life back." I have a contact at the Lafayette, IN Barnes & Noble & she said people were so disappointed with her fourth book that they were returning them! Could you imagine? I never want to write something that my readers/fans would want to return. I think she kinda sold out on that one. When my story is done and my character lets me know that he/she is done, then I will stop writing. *stepping off of the soap box*
Being an editor/writer/artist, I'm sure you don't get to read for pleasure. Maybe one day though, eh? Btw- I'm totally going to have to use your services one day for a book trailer &/or banner. I couldn't do it myself. I can barely draw a stick figure. I have to get a website first. It's expensive to be a writer! :)
#13 Angelpunk sounds awesome.
Angelpunk sounds awesome. Sign me up! :-)
I think what gets me about the constant vampire stories is there are so many whiny, emo characters. I mean...dude, you have super powers! That's empowering! Kick ass! That's what Bloodlines was, which good be why sales were never huge, LOL. Vampires that are angsty men who might kill you = good. Vampires that are kick ass women = unpopular.
I try to get in some reading a couple times a year. I stay at my mum's for a few days and she's on dial-up, so I read...often I bring manuscripts that we're considering, though, and do a full read on my ipod.
#14 Loose Ends
I like loose ends. As a reader, it makes me want more. As a writer, I like to trick my reader. LOL. I leave loose ends, too. I like to end the first book with what seems to be a tight bow & then in the teaser/excerpt introduce a big challenge that my character must overcome. I want my reader to crave more & at the same time, comb the first novel over again & try to put the loose ends together. I'm mean.
#15 I just don't think life is
I just don't think life is ever tied up in a neat little bow, so I never do that. I'm sure my dangling threads bug people, but I like to have arcs that spread for a couple of books, so I try to always plant some seeds that'll grow later. And I've just mixed my metaphors. Go me! ;-)
#16 You have a 22 year old
You have a 22 year old boyfriend? Surely you have everything you need, then! ;)
Why would everyone have to buy 3 copies of your books? You could aim higher, say 5 copies or so.
I think I can help you out with the vodka. The rest is beyond my sadly limited powers. Except the death unto your enemies thing - might be able to work that one out!
#17 woops! this is anna /
woops! this is anna / quillsandzebras by the way. :)
#18 If the 22 y.o. boyfriend
If the 22 y.o. boyfriend lived permanently in the country right now, yes, I'd have everything I need.
I figured since everyone in the universe is buying, three copies would suffice. One to keep, one to lend, one as a back up. I would not object to five, however.
#19 Happy early birthday.
Happy early birthday. Unfortunately, I can't give you any of the things you wished for. :-(

#20 I was going to add "a
I was going to add "a Marcus/Juanita wedding" to the mix, but that just seemed TOO impossible.
#21 Death at hand??!!
If you add the proverbial, "I want a pony" to that list, it reads remarkably like my 38th year birthday wish... and I have yet to see Death trampling faster in my direction... I hope. He does have a tendency to sneak up on a person. ;-)
Happy Birthday
Frances Pauli
#22 I don't want a pony--I want a
I don't want a pony--I want a great big Clydesdale. And I shall name him Bad Horse. Someone else has to pay for board and stuff, though.
My boss told me yesterday that everything goes downhill after thirty. He wasn't inspiring confidence in me...
#23 hey happy birthday in
