New Novella - Haunted
So this novella has been in limbo for, literally, years.
It started out as a favour for my dear friend Judy Bagshaw; she was a part of a group of writers whose focus is romance novels featuring full figured heroines. They'd already put out a few anthologies of short stories and she'd taken over organizing a collection of paranormal romance. She was short on stories and I offered to jump in 'cause I may suck at romance but I can do paranormal and yay for curvy chicks!
That was...four years ago.
It's been a rocky, rocky path for this anthology. Getting enough stories, getting them polished, finding a home... Now, there was an obvious place to send it, but I've had a personal policy for a few years now: since I work at the pub who once upon a time first contracted some of my books, I will not send anything else in there. Conflict of interest, obviously--I'm the acquiring editor, after all. Unless it's from a series they had already contracted before I was on staff, I don't think it's right for me to bring more work there.
After mulling it over with Judy--and knowing my boss wanted more paranormal romance--I pitched the idea to He Who Sends My Paycheque. Five novellas, released one a month separately, and then collected together in print. Yes, one of them is mine, but four of them aren't and Judy is an in house author.
Contract is signed, and so Haunted found a home.
I plan to rewrite mine (I DID write it four years ago, y'all), so it'll be the last in the series to release next summer. But it was loads of fun to write and I'm excited that you guys will now be able to read it. Plus Judy has done SO MUCH FREAKIN' WORK, she deserves to see this damn thing in print. Also, at Mundania, I know I don't have to cut out the excessive profanity in my story.
And yes, it's ROMANCE. It has ROMANCE in it. I know, I know, I'm not allowed to kill the hero at the end.
That's why I kill him at the beginning.
Here's the blurb:
Mia Danvers is a full-figured clothing store clerk with a mean right-hook who's putting her life back together after years with an abusive boyfriend.
Desmond Lane is an arrogant, struggling songwriter and musician, with a charming smile and a fondness for snarky chicks like Mia.
Banter follows, sparks fly, and to the casual observer they might seem perfect for one another…
Except he's a ghost, his killer's still at large, and he wants her to help his restless soul find peace at last.
And you thought your relationship had problems.

Detes: BBW, interracial, 25K words. Coming summer 2012 from Mundania Press.

#1 Yay!!!
Yes, it was a long road... very long. And I am sorry to say it was all my idea because it was my suggestion (after the contemporary one and the fairy tale one, neither of which I contributed too) that there needed to be either a paranormal or a sci fi anthology next. I was hoping for sci fi cos I had a cool idea for a sci fi romance but the vote ran to paranormal.
I have to say that your story does not need a rewrite (but it will be cool to see if you can improve it) because it is so far the only story ever I have read in draft form and been short of improvements I could suggest (I don't think I made any at all, which is so not me. Usually I make up a spurious change just to look like I have done something other than just read). Mine, however, needs a good long visit from Mr Red Editor Pen (who is from the Boston Editor-Pens, in case you are wondering) because, as you say, I wrote it four years ago when I was young and innocent and arrogant and now I am old, and cynical and arrogant and I know I can do better...
Still, that's something to do over autumn...
#2 Oh yes, your road was even
Oh yes, your road was even longer than mine.
I'll drop around an email to everyone--if any of you want to do a round of tweaking ahead of time, that's cool. I'll likely do a content edit on everyone (I've already done Judy's), and Judy can then copyedit. I looked at an excerpt of mine and cringed so while I appreciate that you enjoyed it and I know Judy still loves it, I desperately need to give it a scrub. DESPERATELY OMG. I committed several sins with it that are among my editor pet peeves. EEK! ;-)
#3 To be honest, I plan to wait
To be honest, I plan to wait and see what the content edit says first (plus, at the moment, I am in no position to do long term computer work due to move chaos) rather than blunder in and maybe accidently mess up something the editor loves in the process. Looking forward to getting back into it as I love those characters a lot...
#4 Works for me. I've already
Works for me. I've already sent Judy's revision notes (she might still be cursing me), so I'll start with the others around September/October, probably.
#5 Congrats! *party time* *party

Big congrats!! It sounds great.
#9 At long last...
I am so thrilled we found a home for the anthology with Mundania. I love this company soooo much, and it's Senior Editor even more. I hadn't considered sending the book to Mundania for all the reasons Skyla outlined in her blog--Skyla's a close friend and I didn't want to put her in a position of conflict of interest. But it was just such a logical choice for a home. Sooo, after a long, disheartening search for a publisher, I finally broached the subject with Skyla, and behold, we're here! Thank you Skyla, and thank you Dan. I promise, you won't be sorry. *Hugs*
