Speculative fiction is full of clichés, there’s no denying. But these days, with more and more readers, viewers and writers analyzing the hell out of storytelling, many of the most overused themes are being identified and called out, leading to a gradual fade in the most redundant cogs of formula fiction. We all groan when the cat jumps out of the closet, or the mild mannered geek stumbles upon otherworldly power to seek vengeance on the meaty jocks that stole his lunch money.
